UGANDA

Uganda has long been called ‘the pearl of Africa’ because of its temperate climate, fertile soils and three annual growing seasons.  However, decades of dictatorship, civil war, famines and tribal killings have left much of the population, particularly in the north, physically and emotionally scarred and traumatised.  The number who died could be between 1-2 million.  The impact of HIV/AIDS has also been devastating.

Southern Uganda is largely peaceful.  Here World In Need’s Representative is based in Kampala, and travels extensively in the region, teaching and training local people, and encouraging and supporting the education of children.  Many children here are receiving ongoing support for their basic and educational needs, from sponsors in the UK and USA.

In the North, our Representative works in the Lira area, where millions are homeless and living in Refugee or Displaced People’s Camps.  These people have lived through two decades of civil war, child abductions, brutal killings, maimings, every kind of human rights abuse and the destruction of the local economy.  The women particularly, live in constant fear.

WIN’s Representative is committed to supporting and encouraging these deeply traumatised people.  Many have turned to alcohol as a way of coping with the trauma, hopelessness and poverty.  Tragically, this contributes to the spread of HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and child abuse or neglect.

As well as trauma counselling, trade training gives people a way out of poverty and offers hope for the future.  Around 30 children, many in the Displaced People’s Camps are receiving vital ongoing support through World In Need’s child sponsorship programme.

Unwanted shares?

You can get rid of these charitably by donating them to ShareGift (registered charity 1052686), an independent charity which specialises in accepting small holdings of shares, particularly those which are not worth selling because that would cost more than they are worth. ShareGift distributes its funds to other UK charities and over 1,000 UK charities have already benefited, including World In Need.
