TOGO

Togo is a small strip of land in West Africa wedged between Ghana and the Republic of Benin.  It has a population of about 6 million people speaking Ewe, Mina, Guin, and many more dialects.  French is the official language spoken in most offices with a few people who can also communicate in English.  80% of the population are hard working, subsistence farmers.   The incidence of HIV/AIDS amongst the population is very high.

The public school system is not only under funded but also badly run and so many parents do not send their children to school.  Many villages do not have any schools at all, so young children often have to walk between 5-10 kilometres, to attend the closest schools.

World In Need’s partner in Togo is VINODI (Vie Nouvelle Et Development Integral). Formed in 2000, it is now licensed by the government to operate legally as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO).

Education

VINODI established its own private elementary school in 1999, with 59 children.  This has now increased to 250. The secondary school started with 90 students in 2005, and this has now risen to 150.

Health

VINODI is helping people gain access to healthcare.  It provides money to pay hospital bills for those who are too poor to do so and who apply for its assistance. The group networks with other NGOs working in the medical field in order to give free anti retroviral drugs to HIV patients and provide money for other drugs which would not otherwise be available.

Psychosocial Support

VINODI is providing psychosocial support for AIDS orphans and street children. The children’s club, run by the group, caters for about 30 children, providing them with meals 3 times a week.Savings and Micro loansTo improve the living standards for poor families, VINODI offers small loans with low rates of interest, to groups of women to trade or to farm. They are encouraged to save from their earnings.

Emile Kossi Ativon
WIN/TOGO/CH/111

Emile’s father died from a long illness the same year he was born. His mother abandoned Emile, taking his 4 siblings and leaving the area.  Kossi was forced to live with his grandparents, who are elderly and unable to earn a living.  He is regularly exposed to disease and malnutrition.  He needs to be sponsored so he can attend school and experience a proper childhood.  Would you consider sponsoring Emile?

Dodji Aziadome
WIN/TOGO/CH/100

Dodji’s mother is mentally handicapped and his father has disappeared, so 9 year old Dodji has been brought up by his grandmother. She is too old to work and cannot afford to meet his needs, so he lives much of his time on the streets.  Fortunately a caring person found him there and enrolled him in a local primary school, but without sponsorship he will not be able to continue to attend school.

Eya Essa
WIN/TOGO/CH/107

Eya’s father committed suicide in 2000.  Her mother was distraught knowing she would have to be mother and father to Eya and her four brothers and sisters.  She has found it very hard to meet the children’s needs.  She gathers firewood to sell and Eya has to help.  The family’s need for food is so great there is nothing left to pay Eya’s school fees.  Your sponsorship would enable Eya to go school and live a more normal child’s life.

Koffi Michel Adena
WIN/TOGO/CH/101

10 year old Koffi was born in Guinea Conakry and is the youngest of 3 children. He lost his Togolese father in 2005.  His mother is a Guinean and is jobless. She really cannot meet her children’s needs. Koffi’s paternal uncle was aware of the situation and went to Guinea to bring him back to Togo to their village, where he is cared for. The uncle enrolled him in the public primary school in his village but he needs help to pay the school fees.  Sponsorship would ensure Koffi has an opportunity to continue his education.

Kofi Tekpe
WIN/TOGO/CH/112

Kofi’s mother died a week after his birth and his father died four years later.  Kofi himself is frail in health.  He is now living with his grandmother, who is incapable of looking after him.  He went to school for just one year but then dropped out for three years as he had to sell firewood to help his grandmother survive.  Kofi is now 11 years old and needs to be sponsored to enable him to attend school regularly, and catch up on the years of schooling he has missed.

Nathalie Akra
WIN/TOGO/CH/102

Nathalie is 8 years old.  Her mother is divorced and her father has a severe drink problem and is sick most of the time.  Nathalie is the youngest of 12 children and she is forced to do domestic work, which means she does not attend school.  Sponsorship would enable her to go to school regularly, to have her own friends and possibly to escape the poverty trap she is now in.

Unwanted shares?

You can get rid of these charitably by donating them to ShareGift (registered charity 1052686), an independent charity which specialises in accepting small holdings of shares, particularly those which are not worth selling because that would cost more than they are worth. ShareGift distributes its funds to other UK charities and over 1,000 UK charities have already benefited, including World In Need.
