Kenya is a land with some 42 tribes, each with their distinctive characteristics. The economy is predominantly agricultural, though light industry and tourism make a significant contribution. There are high levels of literacy but education is restricted to those who can afford the school fees.
Following the disputed elections in January 2008, tribal hostilities and rioting broke out in many parts of the country, and many were forced to flee their homes. Many are still without a home or job and poverty is rife.
World In Need Kenya started in the northern area of Isiolo and established work amongst the Borana women, a tribe related to peoples in Ethiopia. However the focus has now moved to the Western Kenya and a major project to create a training centre to service the whole of East Africa is in the process of being established. Foundations are in place at the Lesslie Newbigin Training Centre (LNTC) for a new church, library, computer room, accommodation bloc for the student missionaries, kitchen, and dining hall. The building work will be completed as funds become available. A tractor repair and maintenance unit will provide practical training and sustainable income for the Centre. The graduates will go out to the regions that have the greatest need to use their knowledge and skills to benefit the local community.
Another project has seen the construction of a primary school for children from the poorest families and its staff recently appointed. Fundraising is still needed to construct toilets and to provide wooden desks and tables for the children.
WIN’s Director has recently been involved with the reconciliation movement amongst the Kikuyu, Kalenjin and Luo tribes. Micro finance for out of work people is also being made available. Work in the Kangema slum of Nairobi goes on and many of the children there have been helped to gain an education. Currently 35 children are receiving on-going support through the child sponsorship programme. |

Unwanted shares?
You can get rid of these charitably by donating them to ShareGift (registered charity 1052686), an independent charity which specialises in accepting small holdings of shares, particularly those which are not worth selling because that would cost more than they are worth. ShareGift distributes its funds to other UK charities and over 1,000 UK charities have already benefited, including World In Need.
