The pictures above show a map of Ethiopia followed by various pictures of Ethiopian Street children and also pictures of Yenenesh in the classroom with some of the children now being sponsored through World in Need and also Yenenesh on an outing with some of the sponsored children.
Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in the world. It has always been independent and has never been colonised. Its economy is based on agriculture which accounts for 60% of its exports and 80% of its employment. Coffee, which is believed to have originated in Ethiopia, is its main export. However the agricultural sector suffers from periodic drought and this has lead to frequent and severe famine among the population.
World in Need works in Ethiopia with the Right Path Child Development Association. This is a registered Ethiopian charity founded by a local teacher, Yenenesh Zenebe and her husband. She was an orphan herself and so she has a great desire to help the needy children in Ethiopia particularly street children.
There are many such poor children in Ethiopia, particularly in the capital, Addis Ababa. Often they come from one-parent families because the father has died of HIV/AIDS. Some mothers try to earn a living by doing washing and ironing for others, collecting firewood to sell or baking bread. Even when the husband has a job incomes are so low, (perhaps as little as $12 or £6 per month), there is seldom enough money to send the children to school. There are also many children who have lost both parents and who live by begging on the street.
In Ethiopia, World In Need provides long-term support to over 30 children through its child sponsorship programme. |

Vital projects need your help
Sponsor a child....
and restore life
Our child sponsorship programme, Restored Lives, began after the Kurds in Halabja were gassed. Now we help children and families on every continent.
Unwanted shares?
You can get rid of these charitably by donating them to ShareGift (registered charity 1052686), an independent charity which specialises in accepting small holdings of shares, particularly those which are not worth selling because that would cost more than they are worth. ShareGift distributes its funds to other UK charities and over 1,000 UK charities have already benefited, including World In Need.
