AFGHANISTAN is a land locked nation with many tribes and political allegiances. Decades of conflict between the tribes and with the Russians and other invaders have taken their toll of the people, and many have fled to the west and Asia.
Education and healthcare have been particularly badly hit by the unstable conditions and it is the women and children who suffer the most.
The work of World in Need was started in Kabul in 2003, by Maria, a young Brazilian woman who single-handedly worked to meet the basic needs of the area’s many widows and orphans.
Today World In Need’s work is led by a team of Afghans and has been registered with the government. We now run a Day Care Centre in Kabul, providing remedial teaching, food and art lessons to some of the poorest children. Many are from the Huzara tribe, disliked even by their fellow Afghans because their ancestors were Mongol soldiers brought into the country by Ghengis Khan.
World In need has also been able to distribute food, clothing and basic necessities during the harsh Afghan winters, has helped to re-open the Noor Eye Hospital (now called Cure International) and is encouraging local women to develop their carpet weaving skills by providing outlets for the sale of their work in the UK. Over 120 children receive on-going help with their education and basic needs, through our child sponsorship programme. |

Vital projects need your help
Sponsor a child....
and restore life
Our child sponsorship programme, Restored Lives, began after the Kurds in Halabja were gassed. Now we help children and families on every continent.
Unwanted shares?
You can get rid of these charitably by donating them to ShareGift (registered charity 1052686), an independent charity which specialises in accepting small holdings of shares, particularly those which are not worth selling because that would cost more than they are worth. ShareGift distributes its funds to other UK charities and over 1,000 UK charities have already benefited, including World In Need.
