World In Need is a charity, founded in 1991, and dedicated to working with children, families and communities. We help overcome poverty by providing educational opportunities and supporting a variety of projects. Inspired by Christian values, we are committed to working with the world’s most vulnerable people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender.
Where do we work?
We work in twelve countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. These are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Thailand, the Philippines, Jordan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone.
Who do we work with?
Our partners and representatives are hand-picked by us. Each one is uniquely qualified to serve the local population in the way that will have the greatest impact, furthering our work and making a real difference to many lives. It has been estimated that, every year, the work of World In Need, and the support we provide, directly touches some 10,000 people!
The people we help are part of our family. We know the individual children and their needs, their families and their circumstances. This enables us to give each of them exactly the help they need.
We work with individuals, targeting our resources to aid specific people and families. However, by transforming the lives of one or two, we find we also benefit the many. The effect is similar to the ripples created when you throw a stone into a pond. We help one child through sponsorship. This eases the burden on their family, which helps their parents and siblings. In the long term, the education the child receives benefits the entire community as they grow into teachers, doctors, engineers, better informed farmers, and many other things.
We also work on projects that will benefit the entire community. These projects include: building water wells to give communities access to clean water on their doorstep; building and supporting schools where children who would otherwise be denied are able to get a good education; a feeding programme that ensures all children in a school receive nutritious meals each day; a literacy programme teaching women to read in Afghanistan; and help and support in Jordan for refugees from Syria and Iraq.
What is our goal?
Our goal is to change lives by changing attitudes through education and development. We believe that the best way to help people in need is to give them the power to help themselves. A good education and training in vocational skills go a long way to giving them that power.
What is our focus?
World in Need’s four main areas of focus are:
- Provision of education to children and adults
- Supporting sustainable community projects
- Empowering of women and girls
- Provision of aid to people fleeing war and persecution
Why changing attitudes?
When attitudes change, lives change. When you are poor and vulnerable, it is easy to see yourself as deserving of your fate. Through our work, World In Need aims to improve people’s self-perception, and with it, their self-confidence. Greater self-confidence allows them to see dreams as possibilities, and when you know something is possible, it is easier to reach for it.
How effective are we?
World In Need aims to send 90 pence out of every pound we receive overseas. In fact, in 2016, 94% of all donated monies went directly into our programmes, and only 6% was spent on administration and other costs.
We are able to achieve this because we don’t work with bureaucrats and government officials. All our income comes from generous voluntary donations from our supporters, and we send it to partners and representatives that we know personally.
