Our Work
Afghanistan. Children at our day care centre continue to thrive. As well as a safe place to stay and play, they are able to learn, and have a meal every day. Some of the children have displayed a talent for art and we sell their work for them. As a result of the day care centre, one girl has recently been accepted at University to study fine art. The women’s literacy course is also ongoing.
Azerbaijan. World In Need sponsor children and families affected by the war with Armenia. Nigar has been sponsored since she was twelve years old. Now 16, she is a world class pianist and is coming to England in July 2010 to take part in the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Competition. A new vehicle would be of benefit for the children we sponsor and fund raising is ongoing for this.
Bangladesh. A network of student cell groups provides fellowship, training and empowerment. An annual conference brings them together and allows networking to take place. A small business initiative is planned to create exports to fund new ongoing needs.
Ethiopia. Mainly the work has evolved into caring for children in schools and supporting destitute families. We need to appoint a social worker to meet the needs of the growing numbers of children.
Iraq. Work on the needs of Kurdish people started in 1991 and we are still there. They look after widows sand orphans and have accomplished a number of initiatives such as a violin factory for work. In Baghdad we help impoverished families as a result of the war.
Kenya. The Nancy George Academy has developed into a thriving school of about 125 children, who are getting a good education, and a meal every day. For some, it is their only meal. In the school holidays, we use the buildings to run the Lesslie Newbigin Training Centre, offering training to adults from all over East Africa. We need to build a better kitchen, with brick walls, stainless steel worktops and proper storage space, and are raising funds for this.
Nigeria. The largest African nation seeks to prepare people for overseas work. It has a long history of helping the blind, the mentally and doing youth work. WIN has been given a large plot of land to develop and we are seeking the best way forward.
Pakistan. A school has developed in Islamabad under a Pakistani leader.
Sierra Leone. Adullam Missions Evangelistic Network (A.M.E.N) is a Christian organization founded in August 2001and registered as a charity with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Gender Affairs.
They have been working in the rural areas and in various districts, towns and villages reaching out to the un-reached people groups of all ages. After a decade of civil war, the country was left completely devastated. As a Mission, our areas of development are as follows:
1. Educational Facilities: - Schools, Vocational Training/Adult Literacy
2. Health Care facilities/ HIV/AIDS Counselling and Trauma Healing
3. Agriculture and Animal husbandry
4. Relief and Development e.g. Water Wells and Water 4 Life Project
Togo. The team here works with HIV patients, seek to work with street children and reach out to outlying villages in aid and development. They have a feeding centre that helps these kids and are setting us a school to offer basic education. We are planning to develop the sponsorship programme as poverty is rife.
Uganda. Here we work in both the south around Kampala amongst local communities and schools and in the north amongst the victims of the insurgence there. Many women and children have been traumatised from the fighting and suffer to this day. The leader there looks after many of these children, and has endured much suffering in the last few months. |
